THE HOLY SPIRIT Study No.12.
XII. The "Word of Knowledge."
A. Definition
The "word of knowledge" is the supernatural revelation to man
of some detail of the knowledge of God. It is the impartation
of facts and information which are humanly impossible to know.
It is not knowledge that comes through natural ability,
observation, study, education or experience. It is knowledge
that surpasses the senses of man. It goes beyond knowledge
that is obtainable by any natural means. This is the nature
of all the "gifts of the Spirit." They are not expressions of
man's ability, but are said to be the "manifestations of the
Spirit." (1 Corinthians 12:7)
It is knowledge which is a portion of God's knowledge. 1
Corinthians 13:9-10 "For we know in part, and we prophecy in
part, but when that which is perfect is come, then that which
is in pant will be done away."
B. What kind of knowledge does this involve?
And, it may be added, for what purpose is it revealed?
It may be knowledge of the thought of men's hearts - Luke
5:22; 6:8; 7:36-50; 13:16; Matthew 3:7-12, etc. It may
involve men's plans, such as Ahab in l Kings 21:17-20, or
motives, as in Luke 6:8.
It may be knowledge of facts of the past, present or future.
John 1:1-5 was a revelation of the preincarnate Christ: in
John 11:11-14 that Lazarus had already died; in Acts 11:27-30
the prophet Agabus saw the coming famine.
It may reveal the whereabouts of men- 1 Samuel 10:14-24: Acts
9:10 -18; 10:10 16,.18.
Or warn of coming danger - 2 Kings 6:9: Acts 20: 28-30; etc.
It may expose hypocrisy - 2 Kings 5:20-27:or deception 1 Kings
14; Acts 5:1-10.
C. Scriptural examples of the "Word of Knowledge:"
In the life of Christ:
--John 11:11-14 - concerning the death of Lazarus.
--John 4: 17-18 - exposing the life of the Samaritan woman.
--John 13:38 - Concerning Peter's denial of Him/
--John 6:61 - concerning the murmuring of the disciples at His
teaching.
(Others: Luke 6:8: 5:22; 7:36-50; 13:16)
In-the life of Joseph:
--Genesis 40:5-19 - concerning the dreams of the butler and
the baker.
--Genesis 41:1=36 - concerning Pharaoh's dream and the seven
year famine. (notice the "word of wisdom" and the "word of
knowledge" operating together.) in Samuel's life:
--1 Samuel 3:11-14 - concerning the impending judgment on the
priesthood of Eli and his sons.
--l Samuel 8:6-18 concerning the manner of the coming king.
--l Samuel 13:14 concerning the removal of Saul's dynasty.
In Elisha's life:
--2 Kings 8:7-12 concerning the death of Ben-Hadad and the
coming reign of Hazael.
In Daniel's life:
--Daniel 2:19-45 - concerning Nebuchadnezzar's dream. (Again
note the "wood of wisdom" and supernatural knowledge
intertwined.) To "discern" means to perceive, distinguish or
differentiate. The dividing line between a human and divine
operation may be obscure to some believers, but one with the
faculty of spiritual discernment sees clearly.
